"But a Moment" Revisited

"For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee..." Isaiah 54:7-8

I've always liked this painting, as I thought that it really captured the desperation we feel at times, the yearning for peace and consolation from heaven. However, I pulled it out recently and realized that "hmm.. that looks like the underpainting to a really great painting." I had improved a bit since 2007, and thought I should revisit the piece. So it came back to my easel.

I find this whole process very symbolic, as Heavenly Father often brings us back to these moments of trial, and just like the painting was refined when I came back to it, so we are refined with each successive trial. Moment by moment Heavenly Father refines us into the person He intends us to be.

As I worked I also thought of some painting pointers for my 2007 self:
  • Pay closer attention to your values
  • Use bigger brushes
  • Soften, soften, soften your edges... and don't be afraid to lose some
  • Don't be afraid to go thicker in your application - your oils look a little watercolory
This time around I also added a sunrise to the background, a reminder that although the night may seem long - the morning will come, the sun will shine!

I remember those days when your pleadings to the Lord came through in your art. It was but a small moment and then the blessings flowed!
You always kept the faith!

I feel pain every day but in a different way, ashamed and discouraged. Wondering why I can't break these chains of addiction that bind me. But still I go on, asking for his forgiveness and mercy on my warped soul.

as a newbie that was exciting to see how you added so much depth and richness to the painting and the tips you shared as you were going there are so helpful. thanks!

Hello Jenedy,
I am great fan of yours from the rather distant country of Finland. I came across your art through the pages of American Artcollector and I really like your paintings. I have gone through your blog and it has been nice to read your thoughts and comments related to your art. You have been blessed with lot of talent and and I wish you all the best to your career and life.
Myself I am working in an office and have painting as a dear hobby but lately I have started to dream of doing art more seriously.
These days I have been asking: was painting (one of) the reason(s) I was sent here?
Yours,
Erkki
